Have you recently stopped to contemplate your favorite book choice or a book that you’ve been meaning to read, but haven’t had the time for? Also, if you had to, which book would you recommend to other students, or anyone?
We asked one student from each grade, and their answers varied, from the new book by John Green to classics like The Great Gatsby. Read below for some recommendations and insight into books that our student body has read!
What is one of your favorite books?
Cooper, 9th grade: One of my favorite books... I’d say The whole Percy Jackson series.
Colby, 10th grade: I wouldn’t really say I have a favorite book, but I just recently read The Great Gatsby for a school project, and I thought that one was pretty cool.
Griffin, 11th grade: I’m not a book reader, but I just read a book that was really good: Fahrenheit 451.
Hannah, 12th grade: I’m reading John Green’s book. It’s called Turtles All the Way Down, and I just started on it and I love it, so I guess that’s my favorite book right now.
Why did this book/series stand out to you?
Cooper, 9th grade: Just [because] I really like the writing style, and I really like books that are sort of magical, or sci-fi; stuff like that.
Colby, 10th grade: Well the project was to pick banned books, and the reason that it was banned was because of profanity, violence, and the party scene.
Griffin, 11th grade: It was the first alternative universe sort of book... all the other books I’ve read have been nonfiction, and this one’s good fiction.
Hannah, 12th grade: The book's about this girl who has mental health issues, but not only that, she’s faced with a lot of problems at her school, and about her solving a mystery, and I think it shines a light on mental health issues which are really important. I think it tells a really great story.
Are there any books that you’ve been wanting to read, but just haven’t had the time?
Cooper, 9th grade: A book I’ve been wanting to read... I mean, the book I’m currently reading, which is A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I just haven’t had the time to read it, because of school.
Colby, 10th grade: Not really, I usually just wait for the movies.
Griffin, 11th grade: Ready Player One. Haven’t had time for that one.
Hannah, 12th grade: There’s a lot of books that I’ve started and haven’t completed. I got this book recently... it was from my internship mentor when I interned at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, and it basically tells the story of a ton of short stories about survivors and their survival stories, so I’m really looking forward to reading that.
Would you recommend any other books to our student body?
Cooper, 9th grade: I don’t know, I don’t really have any books to recommend right now.
Colby, 10th grade: Just get out there, read, and exercise your mind.
Griffin, 11th grade: The Outsiders. I feel like everybody’s read that.
Hannah, 12th grade: I’ve been a fan of John Green’s since 2012, so I would highly recommend his books; I think that they’re super interesting, and his characters are really obscure... if I had to recommend anything, I would recommend John Green’s books.
